Position Title : Groundskeeper 2 Employment Requirement Physical Capacity Test and Criminal Background Check Division / Department : Facilities Location Albany Campus, Albany, OR Job Summary : Under the general direction of Groundskeeper Lead, performs a wide range of landscape maintenance duties, working safely with gas and diesel-powered equipment including mowers, tractors, chainsaws etc.

and attending to plants, trees and lawns on assigned campuses. Performs daily, routine maintenance and repairs to equipment.

Maintains and assists with the installation of irrigation systems. Required Qualifications : Education and Experience : Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of two years of full-time experience in horticulture, landscape, or grounds maintenance.

Licenses and Certificates : Requires a valid Oregon driver’s license. Must have, or be able to obtain within six months of employment the following : OSDA O / T;

Herbicide Applicator License

Knowledge and Skills : Requires a working knowledge of the procedures, methods and techniques of grounds and landscape maintenance construction.

Must be able to identify biotic and abiotic disorders of landscape plants. Requires the ability to identify invasive and noxious weed species, with a strong knowledge of native plants and insects.

Must have working knowledge of laws and safety regarding application of pesticide, and become familiar with LBCC’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policies and procedures.

Requires knowledge of proper turf care and the ability to prune trees and shrubs within NAA standards. Requires a working knowledge of the principles of routine operation, maintenance and repair of sprinkler irrigation systems.

Requires sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers, college staff and students on matters pertaining to grounds.

Abilities : Requires the ability to independently perform all of the essential duties of the position in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.

Must be able to safely operate and maintain grounds and landscape maintenance tools, equipment and vehicles. Must be able to calculate fertilizer and chemical application amounts and apply them in a safe manner.

Must be able to operate and perform routine repairs on automatic sprinkler systems. Requires the ability to identify plant diseases, insects and nutrient deficiencies.

Must have basic computer skills. Must be able to read and understand equipment instructions, maps and blueprints. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications : Physical Requirements and Working Conditions : Physical Skills and Abilities : Position requires shoveling of heavy materials and the use of equipment such as mowers, chain saws, pruners, snow and leaf blowers, sprayers, tractors and edger’s.

Strength and agility, and extended standing and heavy lifting are required. Must be able to pass screening to use a respirator when required.

Requires hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate hand tools and equipment. Requires near visual acuity and depth perception to operate equipment safely.

Working Conditions : Work is performed outdoors and requires exposure to inclement weather. Tasks may expose incumbent to chemicals, sprays and other toxic substances which require special handling.

Work may require early, late or weekend hours and variable schedule to maintain irrigation, snow removal, cleaning schedules, and / or other college needs.

Essential Duties : 1. Mows, maintains, and improves soil of turf areas, giving special attention to priority areas. Operates a variety of mowing equipment to navigate wet / dry, sloped and / or open, flat terrain, and special environments (noise control).

2. Applies fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides in accordance with college IPM (Integrated Pest Management) plan, with strict observance to federal, state, and local laws.

3. Plants and maintains a wide variety of native and climate adapted trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and perennials. Mulches and fertilizes in and around trees, shrubs, and in flowerbeds.

Prunes trees according to National Arborist Association standards.

4. Monitors weed problem areas. Removes weeds from curbs, sidewalks, edges of buildings, parking lot berms, and other areas by hand, with mechanical tools, or with the use of approved herbicides.

5. Irrigates turf, trees, and flower beds according to established schedule. Assists in operation and maintenance of high-volume industrial irrigation system by performing tasks such as replacing broken sprinklers, adjusting for proper water pressure, checking rotation of sprinkler heads, replacing valves and fixing broken or clogged pipes.

Assists with installing irrigation system.

6. Provides ideas and suggestions for new or changing landscape projects. Assists with landscape installation.

7. Cleans and maintains sidewalks, stairs, and parking lots. Responsible for snow removal and de-icing of sidewalks, stairs, and parking lots when necessary.

8. Operates a wide range of landscaping equipment ranging from weed eaters and 21-inch rotary mowers to heavy equipment, such as front loaders, dump trucks and trailers, back hoes, and large 50 horsepower tractors to perform associated duties including hauling rocks, digging trenches, leveling, and grading.

9. Performs minor maintenance of equipment. Services or changes filters, performs oil changes and lubrication. Ensures fuels mixtures are correct, and other duties as necessary to keep the equipment running correctly.

Cleans and maintains landscape equipment and storage areas.

10. Trains part-time and work study employees in safe operation of tools and equipment according to State and Federal OSHA regulations.

11. Tours campus daily and removes litter, tree limbs, leaves, and other debris. Collects and disposes as needed.
